PAXIS TECHNOLOGY

You suddenly need a different fishing lure, a pair of pliers, another lens for your camera, your sunglasses, your cell phone.  With your average outdoor pack you need to remove the entire backpack to access your gear.  Maybe you are wading in the middle of a river fishing in an epic tail out full of active fish.  Do you need to go retrieve another spinner or fly from your backpack sitting on the shoreline to change your presentation?  Perhaps you’re floating in a drift boat or raft, or paddling your kayak in a lake while fishing…

There are inherent issues when you’re in a small boat and you only have so much room for all of your gear.  Paxis has none of the everyday backpack limitations, it is the solution for all of your fishing needs.

Gently pull on the shuttle pod release handle, and the lower third of your pack will unlockYou’ll then reach around and swing the shuttle pod to the front of your body in one effortless motion.  Returning the shuttle pod to its original position is as easy as reversing the steps:  swing it behind you, and gently push it in place.  This is the perfect backpack for fishing gear.”  ACCESS, ACCESS, ACCESS

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK

In the Pacific Northwest, it doesn’t get any better than the Olympic National Park.  It is widely known as one of the most scenic places in North America.  There are over 800 miles of maintained trails and countless backcountry trout lakes.  Whether you’re floating down one of it’s wild & scenic rivers in a drift boat, hiking one of the 900,000 acres of glacier-flanked mountains, or exploring a rainforest valley, don’t forget to bring your Paxis backpack.  It’s your best fishing friend.

There is an abundance of fishing opportunity for both the fly fishermen and gear fishermen in this pristine mountainous and coastal area.  Click on this Olympic Peninsula Map for more detailed information.  Lake Ozette is home to a unique population of lake-dwelling cutthroat trout and is also a spawning area for Ozette sockeye salmon.  The lake contains the highest density of freshwater native species in the Olympic National Park.  The park’s rainforest rivers inhabit the healthiest stocks of Winter Steelhead in the lower 48 states, as well as strong returns of Chinook & Coho Salmon.  There are Summer Steelhead opportunities on the Queets and Ho Rivers.  Backpackers are especially drawn to the wilderness portion of the Queets.  Here’s a list of the prime rivers for targeting Steelhead & Salmon.

  • Sol Duc River — Wade access available.  Only experienced oarsman to float.
  • Elwha River —  With dams removed, the Elwha will become a fly fishing paradise.
  • Calawah River — Very technical river consisting of mostly class II and III rapids.
  • Dickey River — A small stream with Sea Run Cutthroat and Coho Salmon.
  • Bogachiel River — Best know for large run of hatchery Steelhead.
  • Queets River — Big trees, remote wilderness valley, wildlife and no crowds.
  • Hoh River  — Great wade fishing access off of the Upper Hoh Road.

The “Oly Pen” rivers are subject to rapidly changing weather patterns & have many river obstacles that are unforgiving & can be extremely hazardous to the inexperienced oarsman.  There are many skilled guides on the peninsula.  I’ve fished for years with Mike Zavadlov and he’s one of the best on the Washington Coast.  He’s pictured below, navigating us through one of the coastal tribs.  You can find more information regarding his guide business by visiting his website at Mike Z’s Guide Service.

CAPE COD

If you’re chasing striped bass and/or smallmouth bass, then without question, you need to consider Cape Cod.  Some have called it the “Striper Capital of the World”.  Striped bass feed throughout the entire water column.  They feed on a variety of food items and can be caught through several techniques.  Utilizing live bait, cut bait, and lures are popular ways of targeting this species.  Surf Fishing is also a very popular way to target stripers.  Angler’s surf cast often using sea worms with a circle hook.  During the spring and fall, large schools of striped bass enter into the Cape Cod Canal.  These fish can reach up to 50 pounds and often be found by a short cast.  Generally, when you get a bite you have found the school.  The Cape also offers miles of beach to search for these prized fish.  Some of the hard core striped bass fisherman will call it an addiction (meth seller caught and sentenced in lincoln ne).  Click on this PDF link for detailed info of Cape Cod & The Islands.  Here’s a few characteristics about “Stripers” that some call the “perfect gamefish”.

  1. Challenge to catch
  2. Delicious to eat
  3. Fairly large fish
  4. Easily accessible
  5. Safe to handle

FLORIDA KEYS

Bonefish, tarpon, and permit are the reason so many anglers are attracted to the Florida Keys.  The Keys separate the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean and span 137 square miles.  It’s climate is more similar to the Caribbean than the rest of the state of Florida.  Don’t for a minute underestimate the advantages of utilizing a boat or hiring a guide to chase these legendary species.  But there is obviously added expenses when paying for this pleasure.  Grab your Paxis and go wade fish and chase a fish of your dreams.  Whether it’s the alure of hooking a robust 100-plus-pound-silver-king, feeling the sensation of your fishing reel sizzle with an irritated bonefish, or matching wits with an elusive permit, the Keys offer outstanding possibilities of landing that dream catch.  You will be much more prepared with Paxis storing your fishing arsenal.  Wade fishing in the secluded Florida Bay flats is a great affordable option for the angler.  From Key Largo to Dry Tortugas, the tropical waters throughout the islands draw many wade fishermen chasing their dreams.  Here’s a few areas ideal for wade fishing in the Keys:

  • Bahia Honda State Park – On the oceanside.  Opportunities for wade fishing.
  • Ohio Key – Another oceanside section of the flats that is best waded at low tide.
  • Missouri Key – Beautiful ocean flat to walk, located at mile marker 39.5.
  • Saddle Bunch Key – Great interior flats especially for kayaker and SUP.
